EDUCATION CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS CONVENE FOR 6TH WORLD ASSEMBLY IN NEPAL

Under the theme "Transforming public education systems for equality, inclusion and justice", the Global Campaign for Education brings together over 300 civil society members, education campaigners and advocates from over 100 countries to debate, reflect and collectively plan according for an ambitious and transformative vision to the full realisation of the human rights of education for all.

WHAT: The World Assembly is a key moment for civil society worldwide and this year's World Assembly happens at a turning point for the movement.  This global moment is a unique opportunity to strengthen and set tangible goals to end the education crisis.

WHERE: Kathmandu, Nepal

WHO:  Camilla Croso the current GCE president and coordinator of the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE).  As President of GCE, Camilla represents civil society as a member of the UN Global Education First Initiative Steering Committee, UNESCO's Collective Consultation of NGOs on Education For All (CCNGO) Coordination Group and as the Co-Chair of the Education For All Steering Committee.

Monique Fouilhoux, Chair of the GCE Board, and has been involved with Education International (EI) since its creation in 1993. She worked on various areas, in particular higher education and research issues and the impact of GATS and Trade agreements on education, with EI affiliates, intergovernmental agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Special Guests

Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Before joining the UN, Ms. Mohammed worked for three successive administrations in Nigeria, serving as Special Advisor on the Millennium Development Goals, providing advice on issues including poverty, public sector reform and sustainable development, and coordinating programmes worth $1 billion annually for MDG-related interventions.

Nora Fyles is the Director of the Secretariat for the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI). UNGEI is a multi-stakeholder partnership committed to improving the quality and availability of girls’ education and contributing to the empowerment of girls and women through education.

Dr. Koumbou Boly Barry, Special Rapporteur on the right to education. Dr Barry took office on August 2016 following her appointment at the 32nd session of the Human Rights Council. She is the former Minister of Education and Literacy of Burkina Faso and has consulted widely for various governments and international institutions on the right to education.

Nafisa Baboo, Senior Inclusive Education Advisor for LIGHT FOR THE WORLD, a confederation of European NGOs promoting the rights of people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups in the poorest parts of the world.
Refaat Sabbah, GCE’s Vice Chair and the Chair of the Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE), and the General Secretary of the Arab Coalition for Education for All (ACEA). Refaat is a lifelong human rights and education activist.
Maria Khan, Secretary General of the Asia South Pacific Bureau for Adult Education (ASPBAE) since 1995. Maria has represented the civil society sector in several international policy bodies/platforms on education, such as in the SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee.
Rasheda Choudhury
Rasheda, the Executive Director of CAMPE, a network of more than a thousand education NGOs and educator groups in Bangladesh. It is well known for its capacity to mobilise millions of people, particularly at the grassroots level, as demonstrated during GAWE every year.

WHY: Worldwide, civil society, including the education movement is under attack. The private sector seeks to aggressively replace deficient States in the role of education providers. Now more than ever, a strengthened and united civil society is required to demand governments act now and deliver the right of everyone to a free quality public education.
