The Regional coordinator – representative of ACEA participated in the Global EFA meeting, organized by UNESCO in Oman during 12 – 14 May 2014.
The 2014 GEM, hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, was the last
global meeting of all EFA partners before the World Education Forum takes place
in the Republic of Korea from 19 – 22 May 2015 marking the target date of the
Dakar EFA goals. Over 250 participants attended the meeting
including the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20
education ministers and vice-ministers, as well as representatives from UN
agencies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, academics,
researchers and other stakeholders.
During the meeting, participants reviewed commitments taken at the 2012 GEM, reflected on the actions required during the last part of the road towards 2015 and deliberated on a joint vision for education in the post 2015. The meeting developed a Joint Proposal on Education beyond 2015. This Joint Proposal is based on UNESCO’s Position Paper on Education beyond 2015, which was discussed and strongly supported by the 194th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board in April 2014.
In their final statement, the “Muscat Agreement”, participants reaffirmed that "education is a fundamental human right" which must be put on the top of the global development agenda for the 2015 – 2030 period. They pledged to galvanize international support for the overarching goal to “ensure equitable and inclusive quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030”, which provides a solid reference for negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda to feature a strong stand-alone education component.
