The Arab Campaign for Education for All participated in the 2nd World Forum on Human Rights that was conducted in Marrakech-Morocco during November 27-30, 2014. The Forum was held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI with participation of approximately 7500 participants represent Arab and international government and human rights figures from 160 countries.
The forum that lasted for 3 days included 100 activities, workshops and seminar in participation of former Heads of State and Government and international human rights figures in order to open a global dialogue between governments and national institutions for human rights and civil society to meet the aspirations of the people of respecting their dignity and achieve equality and justice.
The Arab Campaign participated effectively in the forum where it organized a workshop on the Right of Education within the forum. The workshop addressed the importance of reforming the education system in the Arab region, the need for governments insurance for quality education and equal rights to education, and the protection of the rights of education for children in areas of armed conflict.
During the workshop, Mr. Refat Sabah, ACEA General Coordinator emphasized on the importance of collective and joint work between the Arab coalitions to work and contribute to reform the educational system, and to contribute to policies' development that guarantee the right to quality education. Mr. Sabah also stressed the need for real work by governments to achieve free and compulsory basic education.
Within the framework of participation in the Forum, ACEA declared "Marrakech Appeal on the Right of Education" after the discussion on education situation in the Arab region and identifying education situation in many countries.
The appeal stressed that the right to education is a fundamental right guaranteed by all international conventions and agreements on human rights. All states and governments are required take their full responsibility for ensuring and protecting this right. In addition, and since the right to education is a fundamental right and essential mean to ensure the realization of other rights and a way to fight poverty and marginalization, to build a fair future and equitable opportunities, and to provide hope and protection to lives of millions of people.
The participants in the Forum contributed in the international debate about development goals beyond 2015, which will be the focus of an international meeting in New York in September 2015. In this context, the participants demanded all stakeholders in these workshops to assess the level of achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and to identify new targets based on sustainable development and human rights approach.
In the same context, ACEA developed
a position paper on Education prospects for post-2015 that stresses the
priorities and objectives of education set out in the Millennium Declaration.
It also identified a number of recommendations to achieve the education agenda
beyond 2015.
